JOSERA, a family company

JOSERA has been successfully involved in the animal nutrition and foodstuff segments for more than 70 years. As a midsize family company, JOSERA is always developing further. The company is dedicated to sustainability, innovation, responsibility and safety!

The company history of JOSERA begins with two visionaries:
Joseph and Pauline Erbacher, who founded the company JOSERA during
World War II with a plant for the production of feed lime in the village of Weilbach, Lower Franconia.

JOSERA wrote an impressive success story over the years.

1941 – Founding of the company JOSERA

Joseph and Pauline Erbacher establish a plant in Weilbach, Unterfranken for the production of feed lime, the precursor of today’s mineral feed. In the first few years, the feed lime is only available in 2 kg packages which, according to today’s feeding recommendations, would merely be enough for the nutrition of one cow over about 2 weeks.  

1963 – New plant in Kleinheubach

The JOSERA brand gains popularity among livestock owners, representing healthy and fertile animals. Rising demand for mineral feed makes it necessary to construct a new plant in the town centre of Kleinheubach.


1969 – Joseph Erbacher Junior takes over the management of JOSERA

After the death of Joseph Erbacher Senior, his son Joseph Erbacher Junior takes over the management of JOSERA at the age of 29.  

1972 – Successfully use B vitamins in cattle feeding

JOSERA imposes the highest research and technology standards on itself – for example, JOSERA is the first company to successfully use B vitamins in cattle feeding in order to stabilise the metabolism and promote fertility.  

1976 – JOSERA brings the first milk replacer without skim milk powder to market

JOSERA brings the first milk replacer without skim milk powder to market in Germany, once again proving itself innovative. Farmers benefit from the lower cost of raising calves. The new product also supports the milk payout price.  

1980 – New construction of the company complex in Kleinheubach

JOSERA continues to expand steadily. Josef Erbacher acquires a large site in the Kleinheubach industrial area for the growing company, offering potential for further construction projects. The company grows continuously over the coming years. In addition to the new agricultural production facility, a new laboratory, pilot plant station and new administrative building are constructed as well.

In the meantime, more than 500 retailers in Germany are distributing JOSERA quality products.

1988 – Second pillar: dog & cat food, horse feed

JOSERA as an animal nutrition specialist enters the pet food market. Knowledge and decades of experience from the agriculture sector are incorporated in the new product line for healthy pet nutrition. Over the coming years, the JOSERA pet food line is expanded and improved continuously.  

1989 – Founding of the non-profit ERBACHER-FOUNDATION

In 1989 the Erbacher family establishes the ERBACHER-FOUNDATION. In more than 30 countries around the world, it supports financial development projects in rural areas. Our projects effectively increase human quality of life. The projects improve sustainable animal husbandry, horticulture and the drinking water supply as well as people’s nutrition. They also promote environmental and climate protection.  

1990 – Healthy foods under “ERBACHER – your spelt specialist”

A new business area specialising in gentle grain processing is set up with “ERBACHER Ernährung” (nutrition). ERBACHER produces and distributes spelt-based cereal mixes under the “ERBACHER Ernährung” brand. In addition to healthy spelt as the grain component, the products are low in fat and sugar but high in dietary fibre.

1992 – JOSERA supports German farmers with an image campaign

JOSERA supports German farmers with an image campaign and initiates a German-wide advertising campaign. Information brochures, posters and stickers depict the farmers as producers of healthy food and as conservationists. This is intended to effectively improve the image of agriculture in Germany.  

1994 – JOSERA forgoes the use of antibiotic performance enhancers

JOSERA is the first and only renowned German manufacturer to voluntarily forgo the use of antibiotic performance enhancers for its entire feed product line. The use of antibiotics leads to resistance in people and therefore has a negative impact on human health. Antibiotics in feed are not prohibited entirely across the EU until 2006.  

1995 – Campaign to the “milk purity requirements”

Dairy farmers are concerned about the purity of milk and its image as a natural product: the hormone BST from the USA and the antibiotic Avopacin are slated for EU-wide approval to boost milk production volumes. JOSERA launches a successful campaign to collect signatures supporting the “milk purity requirements”. On 2 July 1995, JOSERA company management presents the signatures of more than 24,000 milk producers to the federal government in Bonn, whereupon approval is refused.  

1996 – Presentation of the environmental award

JOSERA is the first company of renown in the Miltenberg district to receive the environmental award for consistent internal environmental protection activities. All savings realised through environmental activities (energy, waste etc.) initiated by employees are distributed as an employee bonu

1999 – Internationalisation with the founding of JOSERA Polska

JOSERA founds the sales subsidiary JOSERA Polska in Poland. In the meantime, JOSERA agricultural and pet food products are distributed in many European countries.

2000 – The open declaration of products

The JOSERA quality guarantee has always ensured the use of perfect, high-quality raw materials. JOSERA therefore impalements transparency and assumes a leading role in the open declaration of products. While the feed ordinance permits the semi-open declaration of products where all substances of content are listed in decreasing order by weight, JOSERA lists all raw materials with percentages.

2001 – 15 years with no objections in the course of DLG audits

JOSERA has operated for 15 subsequent years with no objections in the course of DLG audits. Not other company in the agricultural sector has ever accomplished such a result.

As before JOSERA is again test winner, corresponding a 100% to the ambitious DLG control standards.


2001 – Construction of the new ERBACHER plant

In order to achieve independence in the food sector, a new plant and separate administrative building are constructed in the neighbourhood of the JOSERA company premises.  

2002 – DLG-Plus and QS certification

The JOSERA quality guarantee stands for the highest product and process quality - JOSERA is one of the first companies in the agriculture sector to be certified according to DLG-Plus and QS (quality and safety). Further certification according to DIN ISO 9001 and HACCP follows a short time later.


2003 – Construction of a highly modern pet food plant

Continuously rising demand for JOSERA pet products calls for the construction of a new and highly modern pet food plant. It is first put into operation in the year 2003.

2004 – Beginning of a success story with JOSERA Emotion

JOSERA expands its dog food product range. With the market launch of the Emotion Line for dogs, JOSERA adds six healthy, high-quality premium dry dog food versions to its product range. They include true innovations like the sauce menu, “Festival” with fish and “SensiPlus” with duck for nutritionally sensitive dogs.  

2005 – Use of organically bound trace elements

JOSERA as a market leader is the first company to use organically bound trace elements in many series products. Animals are able to utilise them far better so that the required quantity is reduced. This makes a significant contribution to protecting the environment.  

2005 – Certification as an EMAS company

As an EMAS company, the corporate group commits to the continuous improvement of the operating environment.  

2006 – Alternation of generations in company management

Josef Erbacher hands the management of the company over to his son Burkard Erbacher.

JOSERA is awarded the honorary certificate for 50 years of membership in the DLG. This confirms the continuous innovativeness of JOSERA and the quality leadership of the JOSERA products and technical consulting.

2006 – The JOSERA mascot “Seppl” is born

The JOSERA mascot “Seppl” is born. From here on a sweet yellow squeaky dachshund represents the JOSERA pet food division.

2007 – Introduce of the JOSERA Emotion Line for cats

Three years after the dog food product range is successfully expanded, JOSERA responds to rising demand for premium cat food and successfully introduces the JOSERA Emotion Line for cats to the market.  

2008 – Expansion into Poland (Nowy Tomysl) and into Ukraine

Exports to Poland and other Eastern European countries have grown significantly over the years. JOSERA responds to the increase in demand with the construction of the world’s most modern mineral feed plant in Poland (Nowy Tomysl). The Polish plant emphasises very good product quality as well, confirming it through its internal laboratory and subjecting itself to continuous monitoring by the DLG.

JOSERA continues to expand and founds a sales company in the Ukraine.


2008 – Founding of Erbacher Food Intelligence

The human nutrition segment under the name Erbacher Food Intelligence becomes an independent company. Frank Erbacher, the youngest son of Josef Erbacher, manages the new company.  

2008 – Innovation prize for JOSERA

2008 – Innovation prize for JOSERA

Research and development is a pervasive process at JOSERA. JOSERA receives the 2009 innovation prize or Seprotect (rumen-safe selenium).

2009 – Development and commissioning of the JOSERA railway station

JOSERA expands its private railway siding. This allows the company to shift up to 45,000 tons annually from road to rail transportation. In doing so, the company eliminates around 4,000 lorry transports a year which means significant relief for roads, residents and the environment.  

2010 – Transport safety for equipping the fleet of JOSERA

For the exemplary load securing system developed in-house, JOSERA for the second consecutive time is presented with the “Präventionspreis” prevention award of the Berufsgenossenschaft Nahrungsmittel und Gaststätten (Employer's Liability Insurance Association for Foodstuffs and Inns). Just the year before, JOSERA received the “Präventionspreis” in transport safety for equipping the fleet of JOSERA lorries with comprehensive road safety systems.  

2011 – The new high-bay racking warehouse in wood construction and new logistics centre are put into operation

With its enormous size of 77 metres in length, 32 metres in width and 30 metres in height, this building construction innovation offers space for a total of 9,200 pallets on 14 levels. The new high-bay racking warehouse has three picking aisles where the pallets are put together according to customer requirements. Computer-controlled handling devices ensure automatic replenishment.
In constructing the new warehouse, the family company consciously chose the renewable raw material wood over a steel structure. In doing so, JOSERA has set another sustainability milestone. The massive gluelam from regional forestry operations is also just as durable and stable as steel construction.

2011 – Establishing a fast and reliable dioxin analysis

JOSERA responds to the scandals in the feed industry by establishing a fast and reliable dioxin analysis in order to ensure the best possible safety for its customers.

2012 – Relaunch of the horse feed line

JOSERA performs a relaunch of the entire horse feed product line – not only is the packaging redesigned, the recipes are further optimised as well.  

2012 – Laboratory accreditation according to the highest possible standard

Das The JOSERA laboratory puts both raw materials and finished goods under the microscope with the latest, highly accurate technology. The analysis equipment supplies absolutely precise measurement results. Independent government-appointed auditors formally confirm the highest standards for the JOSERA lab with the ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory accreditation. ISO/IEC 17025 is the global quality standard for test laboratories. The agricultural test and research institutions (LUFA) are also accredited under this standard.  

2012 – Biological waste gas purification by our JOSERA Biobed

2012 – Biological waste gas purification by our JOSERA Biobed

October 2012 a bio bed for biological waste gas purification was taken into use. JOSERA invested in the biological purification concept,
by utilizing micro-organisms to sustainably clean the whole waste air from pet food production.

2012 – Super Premium Petfood: Introduction of JOSERA "A special Need" - Line

In addition to the successful “Emotion” Line the JOSERA “A Special Need” Line was launched to meet the special claims of dogs - special needs demand special recipes.
Dog owners can choose from an assortment of “Super Premium” products, meticulously tailor-fitted for their dog’s special requirements.

2013 – Presentation of the Klimaschutzpreis 2013 from Bund Naturschutz

October 2012 a bio bed for biological waste gas purification was taken into use. JOSERA invested in the biological purification concept,
by utilizing micro-organisms to sustainably clean the whole waste air from pet food production.

The Bund Naturschutz nature protection association in Miltenberg awards the Erbacher Group the “Klimaschutzpreis 2013” climate protection award for special climate and environmental protection activities.

Among other things, the Bund Naturschutz panel is convinced by the high-bay racking warehouse made of the sustainable raw material wood from the neighbouring Odenwald, the continuously increasing number of raw material deliveries by rail and the exemplary energy management system.

2013 - The success story of the JOSERA family company continues.
